Getting a divorce? Make sure all assets are on the table

Are you one of the many Pennsylvania residents trying to get out of your marriage before year's end? If you are, you may feel that you need to rush your divorce proceedings. Rushing things can result in mistakes that can hurt you in the long run. For example, if you fail to make sure all your assets are on the table, you may walk away with a divorce settlement that offers you less than to what you are really entitled.

The sad reality of divorce is that it is not uncommon for one spouse to try to hide assets from the other. A spouse may do this because he or she has concerns about being left with nothing of value when all is said and done. The problem is, the act of hiding assets from divorce is illegal, and it only hurts both parties in the end.

Finding hidden assets

If you believe your spouse is not being honest in his or her asset declaration, you can do something about it. In fact, you can do a number of things about it. You can:

  • Search your home: You may find hidden documents or property stashed around your house.
  • Search online: You may find names and profiles used by your spouse to hide assets.
  • Search bank statements: If this is something you do not normally do, you may be in for a surprise when you actually see where your money is going.
  • Get help: If you do not know where to start, legal counsel and forensic accounts will.

It can take time to locate assets, and there are no guarantees that certain assets will be recoverable; however, if you find your spouse has been moving marital assets out of your reach, you may use this information to get a better settlement with the remaining assets. Your spouse may also face criminal charges for his or her actions.

Worth the time

Wanting out of your marriage as quickly as possible is understandable, but rushing the process usually does more harm than good. In order to make sure you get the divorce settlement you deserve, one that includes a fair division of all marital assets, it is worth taking the time to make sure no stone is left unturned, that all assets are on the table and that everything is properly completed so that you can walk away satisfied with the end result.
