Dangerous facts about texting and driving

Texting and driving is among the most dangerous distracted driving behavior. Although many drivers believe that they are skilled at driving and texting, motorists who text while they are driving are six times more likely to become involved in car accidents.

The distraction is short but still too long. On average, a motorist takes five seconds to type out a text message. However, taking the eyes off the road for five seconds equals the time it takes to drive the length of a football field. Two seconds is the maximum amount of time that a driver can look away from the road, according to Journal of Adolescent Health in 2014.

Drunk driving is dangerous and potentially fatal. But a motorist who texting and driving is six times more likely to become involved in an accident than an intoxicated driver.

Using a cell phone while driving is involved in six million accidents each year, according to the National Safety Council. A distracted driver injures 421,000 people in this country annually. In 2014, there were 520 pedestrian fatalities attributed to distracted drivers in this country.

Texting and driving is especially fatal for teenagers. A teenage driver using a cellphone has the same reaction time as a 70-yer-old driver who is not using any personal electronic device.

Each day, 11 teenagers are killed in accidents involving texting and driving. Teenagers are 400 percent more likely to become involved in a crash because of texting and driving.

Victims of a distracted driver may be entitled to compensation for their injuries. An attorney can help them gather evidence and pursue their rights in a personal injury lawsuit
