On the road, you need to pay attention and recognize that distracted driving occurs for many different reasons. Although most drivers understand the dangers associated with using a phone or another type of electronic device behind the wheel, many other risk factors can divert a driver’s attention.

When drivers do not pay attention to the road or they take their hands off of the steering wheel, they could cause a devastating accident that leaves victims with a wide range of challenges. In some instances, these accidents prove fatal.

Examples of distracted driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published an overview of distracted driving, which takes various forms. Aside from texting and using a phone on the road, some drivers become distracted because they try to eat food, put makeup on, drink, adjust their radio, read a map or use a GPS. In fact, even talking to other people in the vehicle can divert a driver’s attention from the road.

Any activity that causes a driver to take their eyes away from the road, take their hands off the wheel or lose mental focus can lead to a distracted driving crash.

The consequences of distracted driving

The NHTSA states that more than 3,100 people died in distracted driving accidents during 2019. Furthermore, 9% of deadly traffic accidents in 2019 involved distracted drivers. Even when these crashes do not claim lives, victims can face a wide range of hardships, such as serious injuries that cause them to miss work, medical costs and mental trauma.

If a distracted driver caused an accident that brought these difficulties into your life, do not remain silent.
