What Is an Occupational Limited License?

Rapa Law Office, P.C. March 2, 2021

Getting a DUI in Pennsylvania probably means a suspension of your driving privileges. How long this suspension lasts and the conditions for having your privileges reinstated depends on the circumstances surrounding your situation.

While a loss of your driving privileges is never convenient, this consequence can cause significant hardship if your job relies on your ability to drive. If you need to continue to work despite the charges against you, you may consider petitioning for an occupational limited license.

Your Eligibility

An occupational limited license allows you to legally drive an approved vehicle for an approved purpose. For example, if your job is to drive an employee vehicle to various appointments throughout the day, your OLL may help you to maintain your work despite the charges pending against you for a DUI. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles, you are not eligible to apply under certain conditions including the following:

  • You have had an OLL in the last 5 years

  • Revocation or disqualification of your privileges

You must also meet subsequent conditions including paying fines, participating in a driver’s education course and having an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle before petitioning for an OLL license.

Your Future

Obtaining an OLL license is an excellent way for you to regain trust from others. During this probationary period, you can show that you have committed to safer driving habits. Decide how you will respond differently next time you have a drink so you can prevent a repeat offense. If you can show improvements in your behavior while you possess an OLL license, you can support your effort to get your driving privileges fully reinstated later on.
